MBA exams  preparation tips

What suits me may not suit you and vice versa. So instead of blindly following what someone else tells you, it would be best to create an original strategy that complements you. I am writing this post in the hope that it will be helpful to candidates appearing for such exams in the future. Do not consider my post as a Holy Grail or something which must be followed strictly. Make your own decisions. But yes, more than any coaching institute material, mocks, books, the three things which you surely need are:

i) Self Confidence

ii) Hard Work- Persistence

iii) Never Say Die Attitude

With these few words, I begin:

Written Tests:

For convenience, I have made this post into a Question-Answer format.

Q) 1) What do MBA entrance exams test us on?

Ans)

Most MBA entrance exams will test you on these parameters:

i) Quantitative Ability

ii) Verbal Ability

iii) Logical Ability

You can get the detailed syllabus in any coaching institute material. Different exams have different time limits. You can get more information online, and also at Pagalguy.com

Q) 2) When should one start preparing for MBA?

Ans) The first question which most people ask is What is the Ideal time to start preparation. I would say it would be better to Ask yourself Why MBA first and then decide how to prepare. If you are planning to do MBA without a valid reason, suit yourself. But do remember that it may come back to haunt you later in your life. Now to my first question. There is no ideal time to begin preparation. But generally, 6-8 months before CAT is enough. Am considering CAT as the default exam for obvious reasons.
But I repeat, you do NOT need to study for 3 years or more in order to crack CAT/other exams. Enjoy your college life and do not neglect studies. Plus it is always better to get some work experience before joining a Bschool.

Q)3) Which Coaching Institute to Take?

Ans) Whichever one you want. It hardly makes any difference. Personally I feel that coaching institutes are way too over-hyped with every institute claiming 100% success rate. Don’t be fooled by such ads alone, do a proper analysis before joining an institute.  Best would be just to take up a test series and take mock tests. That’s it. If you have it in you, you can definitely make it into any top bschool, coaching or no coaching.

Q)4) How many Mock Test should one take?

Ans) I believe 10-12 mocks over a period of 5 months are more than enough. But make sure that you peak at the right time, ie when your CAT exam arrives. Take 12 mocks, that too of just one series[IMS].  The mocks provides good practice. And analysis of mocks is crucial.

Things to AVOID:

i) Solving too many mocks, especially in a short span of time: This will just decrease your efficiency and increase your frustration.

ii) Joining too many test series, thinking you will get the best of all: Totally unwanted and useless thing to do. Most mock tests are similar to a great extent.
iii) Getting depressed after one poor performance:Dont get depressed with the result of your first attempt. They are just for practice and analysis.

The most negative point about mocks is that most of them have a high standard of difficulty. Many people get frustrated after solving such problems. But in actual CAT, the problems will be logical based and you will hardly need to remember any formula or complicated step in order to solve them. I personally feel that solving extremely hard problems is a total waste of time. And I know one person who did not TAKE a SINGLE mock the entire season, was working, yet scored 99.7 percentile in CAT and 99.8 percentile in XAT. So it is quite possible to do well without bothering about your mock scores. I got fed up of mocks after I took ten of them.

Q)5) How do I prepare for Quant, Verbal, DI, LR, RC? Which books to follow?

Ans) One of the most common questions asked by many candidates. Here is a short guide:

i) Quant: Arun Sharma books are okay for beginners. You can solve the problems especially if you have forgotten your basics. Else you can take any coaching institute material and revise the basic concepts. Some topics such as Number System, Geometry, P & C, Time and Distance, etc are generally considered more important than others. Solving past papers of CAT, XAT, etc, may also help. Remember that you do not need to be a master of Mathematics in order to score well in this section. But make sure your accuracy is good. Do not do blind guesses. I am personally weak in Quant, so I cannot offer you much advice here, but do remember that with a bit of logic and common sense you can solve most problems.

ii) Verbal: GRE books are good, especially for vocabulary. Barrons guide may be useful for beginners. I personally liked Norman Lewis too. Do revise basic grammar from Wren and Martin or other books. CAT problems are usually typical in the sense that they are tricky, and the options are quite close to one another.
Apart from this, start reading extensively. Books, magazines and newspapers. The Hindu, TOI, ET, Frontline, India Today, etc. Try reading some non-fiction books, especially on management or business. This will not only improve your vocabulary, but will prove quite useful in tackling the Reading Comprehension section. Try to improve your reading speed and comprehending ability.

Remember: Reading books randomly wont help. If you do not like something do not force yourself to read it. For example there is no point starting with Ayn Rand if you are not interested in philosophy, just because your coaching institute teacher told you to. Finally solve previous year papers.

iii) Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning: This section just requires practice and common sense. But make sure that you have both speed and accuracy. Try to do calculations as fast as you can. Avoid using calculators at all costs. Make sure that you avoid passages which may consume too much time. Just by a cursory glance you should be able to decide which are the passages/caselets that you are going to attempt. Most important is not to get stuck on any problem. Practice from mock tests or previous year papers. Arun Sharma has mostly quite simple problems.

Rest will be continued in future posts. Feel free to ask any queries if you have. Thank you.

Goal Setting Strategies to Help You Achieve Anything--

 1) Narrow Your Focus

Start by making a list of what you want to achieve in your life. Then, spend some time reviewing your goals to determine which specific goal would benefit your life most, right now.
Even if you find several areas of your life that you wish to change, it is really important that you focus only on one goal at a time. This will ensure that you are able to put in the attention, effort, and motivation necessary to achieve your goal.

2) Make Your Goal Performance Based

Outcome based goals are often dependent on external factors which are out of our control. These goals can actually demotivate us by leaving us feeling like failures when external circumstances do not change.
Performance based goals, on the other hand, are based solely on your potential, motivation, and efforts; they are completely in your control.

3) Create a Goal Statement with Positive Language and Measurable Terms

Write down what you hope to accomplish using only positive language. Avoid words like Don’t, Won’t, Can’t, No, Never, Stop, etc. These words will only reinforce limiting beliefs and behavior. Focus on what you are going to do, rather than what you aren’t going to do.
Make your goal statement as specific as possible with clear and measurable terms. For example, if you want to lose weight, make sure your statement includes the precise amount you wish to lose by your specific deadline.

4) Create a Timeline

Your final deadline should be included in your goal statement. You’ll then want to break your goal down into precise increments. Create sub-goals with separate deadlines, so that you can easily track your progress by marking your milestones along your way to the finish line.

5) Create an Action Plan

Determine exactly how you are going to achieve your goal. Write down the necessary steps you must take in order to achieve it. Use your timeline to help you create time-centered to-do lists that will help you stay on task.

6) Visualize Your Success

Spend 2-3 minutes each day visualizing your success. Visualize what your life will be like once you have achieved your goal. Make your visualization as specific and realistic as possible.
Consider creating a vision board with positive statements and images that bring your goal to life. If you are an auditory person, try describing your visualizations using descriptive language and affirmation statements.

7) Journal Your Progress and Reward Yourself

Make sure to write down all the steps you take towards achieving your goals. Reward yourself for each milestone you reach. This will help keep you motivated along the way.

8) Be Forgiving and Leave Room for Error

Remember that you are human, not a machine. It is quite possible that you will make a mistake and that is okay. Leave room for error in your action plan.
Don’t push yourself too hard, nor beat yourself up if you aren’t getting the results you want as quickly as you’d like.

9) Be Patient, But Persistent When Goal Setting

Successful people have remarkable amounts of perseverance. They have the ability to push through their obstacles, no matter how challenging that might be. They do not stop until they have what they desire.
Be patient and forgiving with your deadlines, but never lose sight of your goal.

10) Hold Yourself Accountable

Follow your action plan and hold yourself accountable. One of the best ways to do this is to find external support.
Ask a friend or family member to do periodic check-ins with you to keep you on track. Consider joining a support group where others are working towards similar goals. Hire a life coach to help you create a personal goal setting strategy and ensure that you stick to your action plan.

What goal setting tricks do you use to achieve results? Love to hear in the comments!
Advice for Freshers – To Certificate or not to Certificate – that is the question
Discussion now is whether there is any point in getting certified. How much does a certificate help you or hurt you in your job search. Should you go after certifications or should you just focus on the learning process.

How about getting certified when you really have no knowledge in the subject matter? – You know it happens more often than we care to believe it does. We have seen plenty of people who have successfully gotten themselves certified in something like say VC++ and havent really written any VC++ program.
There are several professional certifications out there. Most of them are for IT/Software professionals. Sun Certified Java Associate , Oracle Certified Professional Java SE Programmer, Microsoft Certified Professional – the list of software certifications is a long one.

There are some non-software certifications as well – thankfully in smaller numbers
       – PMI Certified Project Management Professional, ITIL Certifications, Six Sigma Certifications are some of the most famous.
These are all respectable certifications issued by institutions of repute. Now there are a slew of certifications that are not as popular or well-known. Take for instance php certifications in general. The PHP community has not, to the best of our knowledge, agreed on any particular certification in general although there is the Zend Php Certification.

So what should be your approach? Let us say you are targeting the Java platform for a job. Then by all means DO get certified if possible. The truth is that when employers scan resumes for potential candidates, they will give more importance to your experience. But for freshers, that benefit is lost. So how will you prove that you know a particular skill or language. So certifications are a huge benefit for freshers. At the same time, your certifications should give a particular image of you as a candidate. So if you already have an Oracle Certified Java certificate then you can also go for a Linux Certificate.

As a fresher, even certificates issued by training centers (if they are well known) could give you an edge over other candidate who don’t have these certificates.
Our advice is that if you are a fresher, everything that gives your resume an advantage is good for you. So getting certified is a good idea. But make it a point to learn the topic that you are getting certified on. Why? All the certificate will do is get your resume selected for an interview. On the interview, if you are questioned on the topic, you should be ready to answer confidently
Interview tips:

  1. Be there at the venue at correct time.
  2. Be very confident
  3. Do not lie about anything
  4. When interviewer asks you to tell about yourself, please don't start your biography. Ain't nobody got time for that. Just mention your name, may be your college and how you are good for this job.
  5. Let the interviewer finish the question, do not interrupt in middle. And also it's okay to ask to repeat the question.
  6. When you do not know answer to a question, simply say you don't know. Do not give stupid answers.

    Do you know Linux?
Yes sir. In my college we used it. I know it's a very good.....
  7. When you are not sure of an answer, tell the interviewer that you are not sure. And yes, it's okay to do so!
  8. Before coming to interview, practise solving questions on white board in home.
  9. When you know multiple programming languages, ask interviewer in which language he prefers get the answer. You don't want to answer in Erlang when guy has no idea about it.
  10. It's totally okay if you cannot solve an programming question. Really. People are not interested if you got the correct answer or not, they are very interested in 'How' do you attempt to solve it, how you think and how do you arrive the answer.
  11. Be good at Divide and conquer, BFS, DFS, Dynamic & Greedy programming, Graphs.
  12. When interviewer has done with his questions, ask him some good questions. Please don't be naive and stupid and ask, Sir what your company does. A good question would be:

Sir I saw your project XYZ on GitHub. In one of the modules you have used ABC. I can't seem to understand why you made that decision. Why not PQR?
  13. It's not at all necessary to wear formals unless it is specified
  14. It's okay to have a goti or beard! You can still be well groomed with those. Just be clean and smell good. And yeah, don't forget to take a bath.
  15. Also, girls please talk louder in interviews. Seriously.

These are my own views. You do NOT have to agree at all.

if I have missed any point, I will add them later. Hope you enjoyed reading this.

Some tips for you regarding placements, especially for freshers:

  1. Do not have your resume more than a page. Seriously. To tell you truth nobody got time to read each and everything. Companies receive 100s of resumes each day and they have no time to go through all of it. So make sure your résumé is only one page.

  2. Remove all the nonsense which is irrelevant to your job. I am really not interested to know which all books you read and whether you like SRK or Shreya Ghoshal. Seriously, nobody gives a shit about it.
  3. Do not include every trivial projects you did. I saw some wrote that he implemented Quick sort in C.
  4. Following arrangement seems good for me for a fresher:

    Objective, Education, Skills, Projects

  5. And for a exp guy:

    Objective, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects

If you have published some good research papers then add them also.

  6. Do not copy objective statements off the net. It really easy to find out. I really doubt someone who do not have originality can come up with an idea to solve a problem.
  7. Give education details from reverse chronological order. Recent being on top. However it is better to avoid how many marks you got in 10 and 12. They are not relevant.
  8. Do not add every bloody programming language under skills set. Really. Add only those in which you are perfect. And make sure you know which are programming language and which are tools

    Database: Microsoft SQL Server 2008
    Programming languages: HTML, CSS, Git

Above is a big no no.

  9. If you are confident and you do know multiple programming languages then categories them by level of understanding.

    Advanced: Rust, C
    Intermediate: Python, Ruby, Scala
    Beginner: Swift
  10. It's really a plus, if you know a functional programming language.
  11. Majority of students never do their final engineering project and they usually copy off the net or buy it. Do note that's its very very easy to find out whether you have actually done the project or not. So you should have some mini/major personal project.
  12. Please avoid personal section which includes I am group player, very motivated, hard worker etc rather make sure that you show them in your projects.
  13. Some people include father's name, mother's name, date of birth. Those details are totally irrelevant.
  14. Always include your email id. And including phone number is even better.
  15. Your email should be professional, most preferred is firstnamelastname@email.com

    No princessgirl or gothicrocker

  16. Read the job description carefully. each and every world. Lots of people who apply for jobs at CE never bother to read the description.
  17. No spelling mistakes! Run a spell checker!
  18. Lastly, more important one, do NOT lie on your resume.
